Legendary Actor Louis Gossett Jr. died at 87

 




Louis Gossett Jr., the trailblazing actor known for being the first Black man to clinch an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and an Emmy winner for his role in the groundbreaking miniseries "Roots," has passed away at the age of 87.


His cousin, Neal L. Gossett, confirmed the news of his demise to CBS News. According to The Associated Press, Gossett passed away on Thursday night in Santa Monica, California, though the cause of death remains undisclosed.


In a statement released by his family on Friday, they expressed their sorrow and requested privacy during this challenging period. "It is with our heartfelt regret that our beloved father passed away this morning. 


We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family's privacy during this difficult time," the statement read.


Gossett's journey into the world of acting began with what he often referred to as a reverse Cinderella story. 


His talent was recognized early on, landing him roles that propelled him towards his eventual Academy Award for his portrayal in "An Officer and a Gentleman."


His foray into acting started in his Brooklyn high school, where he participated in the production of "You Can't Take It with You" while recovering from a basketball injury. 


This experience sparked his passion for acting, leading him to make his Broadway debut at the age of 16 in "Take a Giant Step."


Enrolling at New York University on both basketball and drama scholarships, Gossett soon found himself appearing on various television shows and befriending Hollywood icons like James Dean.


His talent and dedication earned him critical acclaim, notably for his role in the Broadway production of "A Raisin in the Sun" alongside Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.


Transitioning to Hollywood, Gossett faced the harsh realities of racism, encountering discrimination firsthand. Despite these challenges, he remained resilient, determined not to let bigotry hinder his career.


Throughout his illustrious career, Gossett appeared in numerous films and television shows, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. 


His iconic roles in projects like "Roots" and "An Officer and a Gentleman" solidified his status as a Hollywood legend.


Beyond his acting prowess, Gossett was a fervent advocate for social change, founding the Eracism Foundation to combat racism and inequality.


Despite battling personal struggles, including addiction and health issues, Gossett remained steadfast in his commitment to his craft and his advocacy work.


Louis Gossett Jr. leaves behind a lasting legacy, not only as a groundbreaking actor but also as a champion for equality and justice. 


He is survived by his sons Satie and Sharron, as well as a rich tapestry of contributions to the world of entertainment and beyond.
