Hugh Grant, the famous British actor, has shown his generosity and compassion by donating £20,000 to a charity that provides free plumbing and heating services to vulnerable people in Burnley.
This is the third time that Grant and his wife Anna Eberstein have supported the organization Depher, which stands for Disabled and Elderly Plumbing and Heating Emergency Repair.
Depher was founded by James Anderson, a plumber who was appalled by the exploitation and neglect of elderly and disabled customers by some rogue traders.
He decided to dedicate his business to helping those in need, offering free or low-cost repairs, installations, and emergency care. He also provides food, electricity, gas, and birthday gifts to struggling families.
Since 2017, Depher has helped more than 19,000 households across the UK, relying on donations and crowdfunding to cover the costs.
Grant’s donation will make a huge difference to the charity, especially during the winter months when many people face the risk of freezing or living in damp conditions.
Anderson said he was “shocked” and “humbled” by Grant’s generosity, which he described as “wonderful and life-saving”.
He said that Grant’s donation would help pay for 10 boilers for people with cancer or other terminal illnesses, as well as raise awareness of the plight of many vulnerable people in the country.
Grant, who is known for his roles in films such as Notting Hill, Love Actually, and Bridget Jones’s Diary, has not publicly commented on his donation, but he has previously expressed his admiration for Anderson and his work. In 2019, he tweeted: “This is the plumber who fixes boilers for vulnerable people for free. He is a god. Please give him a hand if you can”.
Depher is currently in the process of becoming a registered charity, which will enable it to access more funding and support. Anderson said he hopes to expand his services to more areas and help more people in need.
He also urged the public to report any rogue traders or scammers who prey on the elderly or disabled.
Depher is one of the many examples of how ordinary people can make a positive difference in their communities, especially during these challenging times.
Grant’s donation is a testament to his kindness and social conscience, as well as a recognition of the valuable work that Depher does.
