Escalation of Conflict: Israel Resumes Gaza Bombardment Amidst Rising Tensions

 

In a resumption of hostilities, Israel launched a barrage of airstrikes targeting densely populated areas in southern Gaza, marking the end of a weeklong truce with Hamas. 

The Israeli military reported striking over 400 targets in the first day, drawing criticism from international humanitarian groups condemning the sustained violence.

Focusing on the crowded south of Gaza, Israel's offensive aimed to eradicate the militant group Hamas. The United States urged Israeli authorities to enhance efforts to protect Palestinian civilians amidst the ongoing conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the nation on Saturday night, affirmed the continuation of the war until all goals are achieved, emphasizing the necessity of a ground operation.

The latest offensive, concentrated in the city of Khan Younis and surrounding areas in southern Gaza, resulted in more than 50 strikes, causing damage to houses and buildings. 

Tragically, in a strike on a house in Deir al-Balah, at least nine people, including three children, lost their lives, as reported by the local hospital.

Approximately 2 million people reside in densely populated southern Gaza, including those who had fled earlier in the conflict. 

Israel had previously urged evacuation from Gaza City and northern regions, asserting that civilians could avoid harm by relocating to designated safe zones in the south. Prime Minister Netanyahu accused Hamas of obstructing civilian evacuation efforts.

Simultaneously, militant groups in Gaza fired rockets into southern Israel, prompting warning sirens. 

The Gaza Health Ministry reported over 200 Palestinian casualties since the resumption of fighting, bringing the total death toll to more than 15,200 Palestinians in the nearly two-month-long conflict. 

Israeli casualties stand at around 1,200, primarily civilians, following Hamas' deadly October 7 attack.

International attention on the conflict intensified as International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan, during a Saturday visit to Israel and Ramallah, affirmed the seriousness of investigating allegations of war crimes on both sides. 

Khan emphasized the imperative for all actors to comply with the law, stating that non-compliance would be addressed seriously. The situation remains highly volatile, with global concerns growing over the escalating violence and its devastating humanitarian impact.
